So you want a red hair colour, but you wondering if it will work for you? There are many different kinds of red. Here are two at both ends of the spectrum.

Christina Hendricks hair colour rocks against her fair skin and big blue eyes. The colour is rich and full of gold and copper flecks.

And Drew Barrymore? She’s chosen to enhance her naturally brown hair with a violet-base. The result is an auburn shade.

Drew’s shade of red works particularly well if you already have dark hair and your skin tone has a yellow undertone.

How To Look Youthful And Vibrant

How To Look Youthful And Vibrant

How To Look Youthful And Vibrant By Hair Salon Bowral Call Us On 02 4861 1120

Want to look younger and more vibrant? Of course! Good skin care, as well as skin care treatments, is half of the equation for exuding good health.

The other half? Your hair. Mother Nature did not create hair colour that is monochromatic, or just one colour. She meant for your hair to have depth and richness.

That’s the real beauty of hair. But as we age, hair becomes more monochromatic. That’s why highlights, lowlights, or both, are a wonderful addition to your anti-aging regimen.

Highlights, which are selected strands of hair that are lighter than your hair colour, are just like your hairstyle—very individual.

The current trend is for soft, subtle colour with less contrast. But rules and trends were meant to be broken! If you like high contrast highlights, go for it! The key is to bring in a picture of just what you want.

Lowlights are selected strands of hair that are painted a shade deeper than your hair colour. Both highlights and lowlights can be used together to enhance certain sections of your hair.

And that’s the fun of it! You and your stylist can discuss the look you want and how to get it. Sun streaks? Chunks?  Painted?

Tell us your pleasure. We know you’ll walk out of the salon with just what you want.

Go Grey Gracefully

How To Go Grey Gracefully

Wondering if you’re ready to go grey? You don’t have to, but if you decide you’re ready, there is a rule of thumb. When your hair is 40% grey then you can stop colouring.

If you’ve previously coloured your hair, there are two ways to transition to your new grey look:

  • If you’re willing to have a short haircut, then cut out all the old colour.
  • Or, have your stylist weave in a few lowlights as you grow out the old shade.

The last approach is a subtle way to de-emphasize roots as the grey comes in, and the single colour process goes out.

Remember, grey hair needs special care, too. You definitely don’t want it to look yellow and tired! Talk to us about treatments to keep it and you looking beautiful.

What Commercial Models Aren’t Telling You

What Commercial Models Aren’t Telling You

Models and actresses are getting hundreds of thousands, some even millions even, to advertise brands. The same goes for hair colour.

You’ve seen Eva Longoria, Gwen Stefani, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce and many more promote these products with promises of how gorgeous and shiny your tresses will be from an $8 box of hair colour.

But the question is, do you believe it? Unfortunately, these people were made to say these things.

The truth is box colour strips the life out of your hair and leaves it looking like straw.

With salon colour, you’re investing in custom colour and expertise. We’ve spent thousands of hours studying and learning about hair and colour. Then, we had to pass the state exam to get licensed so we can formulate that colour for your hair.

The companies who sell drug store hair colour design them for the masses. There is no consideration for:

  • The natural colour of a person’s hair and the underlying pigment
  • Skin tone
  • Level of porosity
  • The use of previous artificial pigments
  • Percentage of gray, if any, and how resistant to colouring it may be

And worse, box colour formulations change and the company doesn’t tell you. That means you buy the same colour but get tragically different results. That’s when we hear,

“I don’t know what happened. It’s the same box colour I’ve always used.”

With salon colour, we evaluate the condition of your hair each time you come in. That’s why your formulation may change from time to time. Or, why we recommend a glossing or deep conditioning treatment. We see to your hair’s needs to make it healthy and beautiful.

Just say no to box colour!

Blonde Colour Nightmare: “What Did They Do To My Hair?!”

Blonde Colour Nightmare: “What Did They Do To My Hair?!”

Joan was a brunette that had decided to go a certain shade of blonde. Referred by a friend, she came into our salon asking for help.

“What did they do to my hair?” she asked.

As soon as we examined it, we knew immediately what had happened.

The stylist did not know how to get the right amount of “lift,” or light colour to her hair, a toner was not properly used, and the correct shade of blonde that the client wanted was not selected.

We determined that in under a minute, but it took several hours to correct the colour mistake. In two more visits, Joan will have the colour she originally wanted. Needless to say, she was so grateful!

It was a tough lesson to learn, but an important one. When you’re investing time, money, and trust in a stylist, especially in a colour as tricky as blonde, it’s best to go to a hair colour specialist.

That’s what we do. Our specialty is creating beautiful blondes!

We put our considerable expertise to work. Our colour specialists study the base pigment of your hair to determine the best plan of action to get you the colour you want.

We’ll also recommend foiling your hair instead of bleaching it. Foiling gradually changes the colour of your hair one-half to one full shade lighter each time.

Usually, the colour you want is reached within two months with a minimum of three-colour applications.

You really want to move into the colour process slowly. It’s so much easier on your hair with foiling. Bleaching, on the other hand, is very drying and damaging. The end result is often an orange or gold tone, which isn’t what you want.

Protect your hair and your sanity! Here at Maree Hairdressing, we love blondes so much it’s our specialty.

The Two Biggest Complaints We Hear About Colouring Grey Hair

The Two Biggest Complaints We Hear About Colouring Grey Hair

It’s bad enough that Mother Nature is causing us to grey earlier. Would you believe as early as our twenties?

But when grey doesn’t play fair, we hear these two biggest complaints:

• “My hair won’t take the colour very well”
• “My colour doesn’t last more than a few days”

For box colour, the shade you’ve always used suddenly doesn’t work any more, literally just a few days. For salon clients, the colourist and the client recognize that the salon colour isn’t holding as well from month to month.

So, what’s going on here?

First of all, grey hair is tricky to work with. It has many more layers of cuticle than pigmented hair. And, to add insult to injury, those cuticles are tightly packed.

Grey hair also lacks melanin and tends to be coarse. This makes it more difficult for dye to fully penetrate the shaft.

Not all grey hair is difficult. Resistant grey is the term we use to distinguish grey hair that is harder to colour.

Does that mean you have to give up colouring your hair? Heavens no! But you will have to give up that nasty box colour. No loss there. In fact, your hair will see a significant improvement with salon colour.

And for salon clients with resistant grey, your colourist has already switched formulas! For this hair texture, we use colour that pops open those tightly packed cuticle layers. The colour easily penetrates the cuticle layers.

This best part is you get healthier looking hair and a much younger look!

“Is It Safe To Colour My Hair While Pregnant?”

“Is It Safe To Colour My Hair While Pregnant?”

So your hubby tells you how beautiful you look, and you’re just trying to waddle to the nearest recliner to take the pressure off your back.

Or, you’re trying to keep your breakfast down.

Either way, he means well. With a body that’s changing daily, you can be hard on yourself. You love what’s happening on the inside, but on the outside…?

Not so much.

Pregnancy is a special time in your life. So do whatever you can to celebrate it. One treatment that makes women feel really good is getting their hair cut and coloured.

Yet, colouring their hair is the very treatment that women give up during pregnancy. For many years, it was feared that hair colour would negatively affect a woman’s growing baby.

Well, we’ve got great news. The Organization of Teratology Information Services (OTIS), the organization that provides information on potential reproductive risks states that colouring your hair while pregnant is relatively safe because so few chemicals are absorbed into your system.

This is especially true if you limit colour to highlighting, lowlighting, or balayage techniques. In other words, opt out of all over colour.

Just like massage, OTIS recommendeds that you wait until the beginning of your second trimester before colouring your hair. There is one wild card, though. Because your hormones are fluctuating, the colour may not absorb as properly. The result could be lighter than expected colour, but we can colour correct.

If getting your hair coloured during pregnancy makes you feel good, talk to your doctor about it. We’ll get you through pregnancy beautifully!

Thinking About Going Blonde? Here’s What You Should Know! By Hair Salon Bowral Call Us On 02 4861 1120

Have you been itching to go blonde?

That’s a good sign that you’re really ready to make the change, especially if you’re holding magazine pictures up to the mirror, wondering, “How would this look on me?”

Well, before you take the life-changing leap, there are a few things to consider before you make the color change:

• It’s best to match your new color to your skin tone, brows, and eye color. Hair color that is coordinated to compliment your natural coloring looks far more natural.

• Some hair types, like fine and thin, simply can’t handle foiling, much less traditional bleaching. There is too much danger of extreme dryness, brittleness and possible breakage. It may be that tinting is more suitable.

• For brunettes wanting to go blonde, be patient! To reach the level blonde that’s a knock out for you, it’s important to take it at a pace that’s easiest on your hair. That’s why we recommend foiling over bleaching. The latter is just too harsh.

• For natural redheads, your blonde hue will be a golden and lovely strawberry in the beginning. A slow, deliberate diversity of tones will flatter your face.

We also recommend that you start with healthy hair. Dry, damaged, or slightly porous hair will take a little longer to color because we don’t want to damage it further.

Your blonde color requires maintenance treatments to keep it looking beautiful. Deep condition it weekly. Have your stylist also professionally deep condition it for maximum body, bounce, and shine.

Our products contains moisture-balancing properties for a smooth finish. We also have styling products that contain polymers, which create a film around the hair to protect it from moisture loss.

And finally, we also have various home care products with a panthenol- based formula to also moisturize the hair inside and out.

We’ve got you covered. So, if you’re going to go blonde, be the bomb!
